Elsewhere, we’re from here by Nidhal Chamekh (Dahmani, 1985) is the fifth site-specific installation in the MUDEC agora and will be presented on December 3, introducing the process of reorganization and expansion of the museum’s Permanent Collection.
Chamekh occupies the Agora space by using the glass walls as a large screen displaying black-and-white compositions of drawings, sketches, photographs, and transfers.
The images mix objects and works of art from the collections of MUDEC and the Museo del Risorgimento in Milan, colonial-era photographs from Italian archives, and documentation concerning contemporary stories of exile, offering a fresh perspective on the theme of Western colonialism, particularly in Africa.
The title of the artwork references the poster D’ailleurs nous sommes d’ici, created in 2009 by graphic designer Sébastien Marchal in support of undocumented migrant workers’ rights and subsequently adopted by anti-racist collectives and social movements. The phrase plays on the double meaning of d’ailleurs (‘from elsewhere’, but also ‘besides’) to question notions of belonging and dismantle the narrative that frames the migrant as a perpetual outsider, asserting the presence and legitimacy of diasporas within contemporary social and cultural fabrics.
“The goal,” – states Chamekh – “is to express the vibrant and untamed frictions of the world ‘from elsewhere’ living, acting, and struggling inside the Italian framework itself. Against the museum narrative that smoothes out the rough edges of history, exile is the space of the ‘in-between’ (as defined by Edward Saïd), a space of critical connections from which another historical truth is articulated”.
The solid archival research underlying his work takes the form of a visual atlas. Like ghosts dense with memory and political energy, the images coexist, creating unprecedented relationships between past and present. The result is a vast palimpsest where distinct eras, bodies, and memories interact with one another. Through the interplay of transparency and opacity, the images shift in response to the visitor’s movement and the changing natural light. The MUDEC Agora, designed by David Chipperfield, is thus transformed into an ‘architecture of resonance’ – a space for active critical engagement with collective memory and diasporic identity.
Elsewhere, we’re from here is curated by Sara Rizzo.
