PIET MONDRIAN
From figuration to abstraction

November 24th, 2021 – March 27th, 2022

The exhibition will bring to Milan for the first time a project entirely dedicated to this Dutch artist and to the evolutionary artistic process which took him from figuration to abstraction, from the tradition of the Dutch landscape to the development of his unique style, which made him recognizable and universally famous.

The exhibition was realized thanks to the collaboration of the Kunstmuseum den Haag, holder of the world’s most important collection of Mondrian’s works and which lent sixty works, chosen among the works of Mondrian and of other artists which best represent the Hague school. The exhibition will also display other masterpieces coming from important museums and private collections.

Following the concept of the director of the Kunstmusem Benno Tempel and under the curatorship of Daniel Koep, Head of Exhibitions, and of Doede Hardeman, Head of Collections, the itinerary will come to life and unfold through various thematic sections.

The theme on which the comparison will take place between the first “figurative” period and the “abstract” period is the landscape. Visitors will be offered a visual and therefore immediate interpretation of the artist’s stylistic evolution. A section of the exhibition will be dedicated to “De Stijl” (or “Neoplasticism”), a movement that arose in the Netherlands in 1917, on the initiative of Mondrian himself and of Theo van Doesburg and still active on the threshold of the Thirties, which innovated art, architecture and design.
