MAORI ART IN MILAN. The ducal salon of George Nuku
George Nuku, New Zealander artist from the Maori culture, will be in residence at MUDEC from the 1st to the 29th of September 2016, during which time he will create the exhibition Ducal Salon: a room furnished with Kartell furniture sculpted by the artist using traditional Maori carving techniques and forms.
Ducal Salon will be the room of an imaginary noble Milanese palace, adorned with twenty-six pieces of Kartell furniture and accessories donated by the company, which with this collaboration once again underscores its attention to the world of arts and culture including through the processes of research and experimentation.
The exhibition Ducal Salon will be installed inside the Spazio delle Culture Khaled al-Asaad from 29 September to 13 October 2016. On the evening of 13 October twenty of the furniture pieces of Ducal Salon will be sold at an auction conducted by Sotheby’s. All the proceeds will be donated to the Non-Profit Associazione Città Mondo, to help finance the project Mudec P.O.P (People, Objects, Participation). Mudec P.O.P. aims to enhance the cultural patrimony of Asia, Africa, America, and Oceania in the care of MUDEC, stimulating real actions of intercultural participation and an active role in the interpretation of the museum and the heritage represented within it.
MAORI ART IN MILAN is a collaboration between the artist George Nuku and Mudec – Museo delle Culture and has been made possible thanks to the invaluable collaboration of the Kartell Museum, with the support of Sotheby’s and 24 Ore Cultura.
The project is curated by Carolina Orsini and Iolanda Ratti, conservators at MUDEC, with the assistance of Sara Chiesa and in collaboration with Elisa Storace, curator at the Kartell Museum.
