From muralism to street art

MUDEC Invasion

March 20th – June 29th, 2025

Curated by Alice Cosmai

The exhibition, produced by 24 ORE Cultura – Gruppo 24 ORE, with the support of the sponsors Turisanda1924 – part of Alpitour World, Ford and the Partner Boero, curated by Alice Cosmai, head of the “Art in Public Space” Office of the City of Milan is the first mural art project commissioned in a public museum, which transformed the spaces of MUDEC through the site-specific works of 10 international muralists. The historical section is curated by art historian Silvia Bignami.

Luca Barcellona, with his calligraphic art; Zoer, French artist and designer with a talent for colour; Capo.Bianco, an Italian artist with a geometric stroke; the Italian Hitnes with his works inspired by nature and the animal world; Mazatl, a Mexican muralist and engraver previously unseen in Europe; Neethi, an Indian artist, illustrator and designer; Cinta Vidal, a Spanish artist with her works that challenge perspective and architectural conventions; Agus Rùcula, an Argentinian muralist and photographer known for her relational murals; Aya Tarek, an Egyptian visual artist with a vibrant stroke; and Mohammed L’Ghacham, a Spanish naturalised Moroccan artist who connects photography and large-format painting.

Each of them created a new work, visible only for three months during the exhibition, with which they interpreted the theme of “Journey” according to their personal vision: from the calligraphic stroke to the brushstroke, from the engraving to the graphic, each intervention is unique and tells a different story. Through the choice of this subject, commissioned by the MUDEC as part of the third project with an interdisciplinary slant that characterises the entire programme of initiatives dedicated to the tenth anniversary of the Museo delle Culture, this exhibition is in a complementary dialogue with the exhibition “Travelogue: Stories of journeys, migration and diaspora“, hosted in the museum’s Focus rooms.

The project overturned the usual organisational logic of a traditional exhibition, creating an entirely innovative experience that invites visitors to reflect on the evolution of contemporary urban muralism as an art form necessarily in motion, capable of restoring meaning to the places it touches. It is a language with a powerful identity, which creates community and a sense of belonging, both when it expresses itself spontaneously and when it arises at the urging of an institutional commission.
