An exhibition at Mudec showcasing the life and explorations of the Milanese naturalist
The exhibition, organized in collaboration with the Antonio Raimondi Museum (MAR) in Lima, explores various aspects of the life and explorations of the renowned Milanese naturalist Antonio Raimondi (1824–1890). Beginning with his education in Italy, the exhibition traces the adventures of this explorer: life in mid-19th-century Milan amid scientific fervor and Risorgimento passions, the journey to Peru, and the exploration of that country through fieldwork. It then covers the creation of Peruvian cartography, the discovery of plants, animals, and traces of the pre-Hispanic past of the Andean region, up to the international recognition of his scientific work and the legacy this scientist left behind—a legacy gathered by MUDEC researchers who are ideally continuing his work through two field missions in South America.
The exhibition unfolds through a variety of original artifacts, most of which come from major Peruvian institutions as well as prestigious Italian lenders. Through paintings, maps, and archaeological and natural history objects, visitors will be able to appreciate the incredible scientific work of this prominent 19th-century Milanese scientist and, at the same time, discover the biodiversity and cultural richness of the Central Andes region of South America.
